Abortion Eduqas

(1)
Lesson looking in depth at abortion and the moral issues- at least 2 lessons worth of content. The lesson begins by defining abortion and giving reasons somebody might want to seek an abortion. Students then explore the law in England regarding abortion. The next part of the lesson begins by looking at the stages of pregnancy, this is essential in order for students to make an informed decision about ‘when life beings’. A case study of Melissa Ohden is explored, Melissa was aborted at 20 weeks but survived. The lesson then explores the ‘qualitity of life’ debate and looks at the case study of a couple who’s baby would not survive, however the baby did survive. Finally the lesson looks at the debate about who has ‘rights’ the baby, the mother or the father. Students complete a sorting task and organise statements into Pro-Life and Pro-Choice columns. The lesson then looks at Catholic, Anglican and Humanist views towards abortion. Finally the lesson looks at the ‘Loose Women’ debate ‘Should the law on abortion be changed’ I think watching abortion on trial would help to create an unbiased opinion. I will add some questions to consider while watching.
